1515’s New Rewind Lounge

by Grace Boyle on March 25, 2016

1515 Restaurant is no stranger to the Denver restaurant scene. Chef/Owner Gene Tang opened 1515 Restaurant in LoDo with his wife Paula, in 1997 and they’re still standing strong. They serve inventive cuisine and leverage molecular gastronomy. The menu is mixed with contemporary American dishes underlined with classical techniques that Tang and his team bring to the table.Chef Owner Gene Tang

I wrote about 1515 in 2011, and when I ate there the meal was incredibly memorable [take a look at the post, the presentation of the food in particular is very delicate and beautiful].

Tang’s first restaurant opened when he was just 27, after selling that successful restaurant he soon found himself running three other restaurants in the Denver metro area. After retiring (yes retiring) he found himself checking out 1515 Market Street, a building constructed in the late 1800’s. Turns out, he couldn’t stay away. Within three months, he bought the space and 1515 Restaurant was born and 19 years later, he jokes, he’s still there everyday.

Rewind Lounge:

To freshen up the space and the bar downstairs, this February, they rebranded as Rewind Lounge, an “American social eatery” and added a patio space out front.

Aesthetically they’ve renovated the ground floor space (the dining room upstairs remains the same classic space) where their focus is to be hip and be a place where guests can rewind or relax. Accordion windows will open to the outdoor in the summer, and they’ve added wood paneling and circular LED lighting to the new design.

The bar menu has classic cocktails like Old Fashioneds or Manhattans, but they are made with Colorado spirits and house-infused syrups. Tang is well-known for his molecular gastronomy so bar manager, Rena Day, has followed in suit creating fun cocktails like their Strawberry Champagne cocktail which has strawberry “caviar” pearls.

Their “social hour” is 4-6:30 p.m. daily and they’ll also be hosting Molecular Mondays, where a new cocktail is created each week, so you can try something new.

The bar menu will focus on small plates and lounge fare, and the regular 1515 menu will also be available. The lounge menu includes everything from steamed mussels, to spring rolls with ginger soy, to bruschetta – focusing on dishes that are $10 and under.
