When you think Flagstaff House, you think fine dining, incredible views and majestic. This Boulder restaurant sits at the top of Flagstaff mountain at an elevation of 6,000 feet, on a cliff overlooking Boulder with 360 degree views. Yeah, they don’t mess around.
Flagstaff House is all those things, but what might surprise you is their innovation and focus on staying current and unique.
Location: 1138 Flagstaff Road, Boulder, CO
Cuisine: French-American Cuisine (Fine Dining)
I love the deep rooted family ties with the Monette family at Flagstaff House. Co-owners, Don Monette and his sons Mark, (Partner and Executive Chef, cooking at Flagstaff House for 25 years) and Scott, (Partner and General Manager) have been running Flagstaff House since 1971. Flagstaff House has been in business for forty years.
Recently we checked out Flagstaff for dessert and after-dinner wine and even on a Monday they were bustling busy.
Right away, I was impressed with their iPad wine list (talk about innovative, even after all these years) and their 12,000 bottle wine cellar.
iPad Wine List:
I’m a geek girl who works online, so I appreciated the sleek iPad (Tiare Technology, Wireless WineList) where the wine list (2,500 selections available) is displayed beautifully and the interface is easy to use. The application which launched in February 2011, includes tasting notes, vintage information, the winery and the region or the grape varietals. It’s truly visual and meant for a novice or experienced wine drinker. You can’t help but feel current.
Let’s Get to the Sweets:
Next, we had an array of desserts. They were decadent and rich including fresh fruit tarts, chocolate, sharp cheese’s, blueberry panna cotta, key lime tart with toasted macadamia nuts and chantilly cream and fresh spun vanilla bean ice cream.
12,000 Bottles Strong:
Next we toured the wine cellar, where 12,000 bottles of wines are housed. Every year since 1983, they’ve earned the coveted Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, which recognizes one of the ten best wine lists in the world. Their wine steward Neyah Margolis, Sommelier, has been with Flagstaff House since 1996.
James – A bottle of Crystal worth well over $20,000.
It’s no wonder Flagstaff House is recipient to many awards including Metromix’s Best Romantic/Date Restuarant, Westword’s Best After-Dinner Coffee and one of OpenTable’s Top 50 American Cuisine Restaurants. The atmosphere, the location, the personal staff and service and their array of dining combine for award-winning.
I asked Scott how they stayed open and successful for so long and he said they are “constantly changing.” They focus on updating the restaurant, the food, and even innovative products that can enhance the experience such as building the iPad wine list.
Flagstaff House is perfect for celebrations or a special date. In the summer, sit out on the patio while the lights twinkle down in Boulder or head up the mountain for a night cap with dessert or a drink. You will not regret your decision.
