Based in San Francisco is La Cocina, an incubator for home chefs that helps guide and turn them into businesswomen and entrepreneurs, through food.

I love this idea. Both my parents are entrepreneurs and I’ve been working in startups since I graduated from college.

Based in San Francisco’s Mission District, La Cocina provides commercial kitchen space and technical advice to their attendees, largely low-income women who have immigrated but want to start their own food business. This helps tie together the local economy, create more jobs and allow these women to do what they love. A beautiful circle if you ask me.

There are currently 30 up-and-coming businesses at La Cocina. The food representation is vast and includes catering, specialty products and farmers market stands. You can learn about some of the businesses and women represented here.

I’m touched by non-profits like this. Food binds us together and sometimes all you need is a little support and a push in the right direction.

This is a really interesting model to me. I used to work at the Boulder Small Business Development Center, a non-profit that offers free consulting support to Boulder small businesses. Quite a few of the folks who reached out to us for help were aspiring food entrepreneurs – a commercial kitchen, technical advice, and business advice were definitely the top three resources that were requested.

I agree. I would love to be a fly on the wall to watch the process in non-profits like this. I love how food can really be a catalyst for business no matter where you are in the world. It binds us!
