However, it’s important to note at this point that whey protein powder is only suitable for those on a gluten-free diet when the whey is labeled as either whey isolate, whey hydrolysate, or whey concentrate.

Labeling

It’s important to note at this point that rather than being labeled “dairy-free” many protein powders that are “dairy-free” are labeled “vegan” or “plant-based” instead.

The other thing to know is that, since protein powder generally doesn’t contain gluten protein (see also “Best Paleo Protein Powder“), it may not necessarily have a large label reading “gluten-free”. 

There are also many protein powders around now that carry the label of “Climate Pledge Friendly” which may also be worth considering.

Flavors

If you want to add your protein powder in with other ingredients, for instance in smoothies, then perhaps you’ll feel that the more neutral the taste is the better.

But protein powders are rarely flavorless. The most common flavor tends to be vanilla, which, thankfully, is a flavor that lends itself to being combined with other ingredients and flavors.

Method
